I get vista and want a cheap graphics card which plays games well
Is the 8600GT a dutiful ample Direct X 10 Graphics Card for resolutions of 1280*1024?
At 1280x1024, the 8600 GT can run any hobby currently on the market.
Yes the 8800 GTS is better, as you will hear oodles people utter, but its also overkill at that resolution (not to mention $150 more).
That being said, plentiful of the DX9 cards at competing price points (such as the 7900 GS, Radeon x1950 Pro) which can be found close to the same price point deliver FAR superior recital in games at this point. I hold an x1950 Pro myself, and I can turn up the AA and AF all the agency at the 1280x1024 res. You wouldn't be able to do so beside an 8600 GT.
So you have to establish what you value more. DX10, or legitimate world performance.
The 8600GT (in my opinion) is a low-end solution for gaming surrounded by DX10. You would be better served by looking into an 8800 GTS 320 MB version. It have more power than the 8600 and is now especially close in price if you can find one on public sale or with a rebate, as they recurrently are. I still wouldn't classify either card as cheap though. :-)
