Lost the write protection thingy on my SD card! What can I do?

It's with the sole purpose 2 - 3 millimeters tops. Does it actually do something surrounded by the card itself or is it only a plug to block a sensor, (like the plastic plug on the support of a cassette tape)? Can I stuff something over it or tape it to write on the card? Thanks surrounded by advance!
