the usb is on com port 5 but beneath manager it states not connected for the phone I enjoy been to soney and also to compac but they enjoy given up

check your security settings. probably they block it.
i have similar experience in the past. my laptop can recognize my usb but didn't spot my portable harddisk. I found out that my security settings block other things except my usb.
